Research Workshops

PREAMBLE

In a recent years, new forms of scientific cooperation have been appeared. Scientists of different sites form temporal working groups (for several weeks - few months) devoted to special topics, to discuss results, to exchange experience and to work together. The point is that senior scientists with permanent positions can leave their home institutions, as a rule, only for a limited amount of time, young scientists are more mobile and looking around the world for perspectives.
This trend can be observed at the Bogoliubov Laboratory (BLTP). A slow but steady reduction of long-term (like 1-3 years traditional for JINR) and middle-term visits of scientists from the member-countries of JINR is observed. Thus, long-term stays now are possible only in exceptional cases. Besides other reasons such as the present economic situation and living conditions in Russia, it becomes still more difficult for visiting scientists to leave permanent position for long terms. Meanwhile, the number of short-term visits to Dubna, at workshops and conferences, is not decreasing.
In the world the practice of temporal research groups become of still increasing importance. Such groups allow a small number of scientists to cooperate effectively in the field of fundamental theories as well as in the interpretation of experimental data.
The Bogoliubov Laboratory at JINR is installing "Research Workshops" as a new possibility for theoreticians to establish temporal working groups at Dubna. This project follows the modern tendency mentioned above. It will enable increasing the number of middle-term visits to the Laboratory.
PROJECT

The project will consist of specialized Research Workshops that last for 1 to 2 months and gather a small number (3 - 5) of qualified specialists in the fields interested in contacts and short-term collaborations, as well as a group of (5 - 10) young and beginner scientists who wish to rise their qualification.
A Research Workshop (=RW) comprises, first, the workshop itself during which experts and young scientists contact each other, including short cycles of lectures. Second, it includes a small conference (2--3 days) summarizing the workshop results.
The BLTP can be considered at present time as a leading centre in different fields of theoretical physics with well-established tradition and infrastructure for international cooperation. It is supposed that the prerequisites related to the infrastructure (computer facilities, library, offices, Xerox) will be provided by the BLTP within an appropriate extend.
The project is headed by the Advisory Board of leading Laboratory experts; every RW will be organized by workshop coordinator(s).

APPLICATION
Applications for the annownced RW (and proposals for a new one) should be addressed to a coordinator (or to Advisory Board) via the Lab. scientific secretary Dr. V.Zhuravlev (vzhur@thsun1.jinr.dubna.su).
